Are you joining the Water Challenge?
Today marks the launch of the Water Challenge, an inspiring 30-day initiative by the NGO Join For Water, aimed at significantly reducing our daily water consumption. Did you know that most of us in Belgium have an average daily water footprint of 7,400 liters? Most of us are unaware of the sheer volume of water our lifestyle demands.
While we often think of showers and watering gardens as one of our main water usages, there's much more beneath the surface. Our "hidden water consumption" is substantial. For instance, producing just one chocolate bar requires an astonishing 1,700 liters of water! This way, some countries import 75% of their total water volume consumed.
That does not even consider the astonishing average of 26% of the drinking water that never arrives at its destination in Europe, mainly caused by leaks in distribution networks. The people at the water utilities do what they can every day with the means they have. But they need more attention from our leaders to urgently invest more in our water distribution infrastructure to make it sustainable and more efficient so they can track and repair these hidden, often underground, leaks efficiently.
Is there a solution? Luckily, yes. The technology exists. It is the same technology that goes way beyond digital water metering, and it can even help us save up to 25% on our daily water consumption without probably noticing it.
Curious? Be prepared to be amazed.
Success with the Water Challenge! Together, we can MakeEveryDropCount.
